Weymann Style 4 Tenor Banjo

Written by Paul Conlon. Posted in Banjo Archive, For Sale

1930 Weymann Orchestra Style 4 tenor banjo made in Philadelphia, USA. A very classy banjo with neck, rim and resonator made from Brazillian rosewood and gold plated metal parts throughout.

Banjo details:

Its hard to believe these banjos had a price tag of $320 US dollars back in the twenties which is around 1/3 of a teachers salary in the late twenties. The Style 4 is exactly the same as the style 5 only difference is the style 5 has the extended fret board. The rosewood neck is reinforced with multi laminated different coloured woods to give it extra strength plus coloured veneers between the neck and fingerboard. The heel is capped with ebony and coloured veneers and is hand carved either side at the base of the neck. The ebony finger board is elaborately inlaid with the ‘tree of life’ vine mother of pearl the full length of the 19 frets. The edges are bound with ivory celluloid and position dots on the side. The head stock is capped with ebony and coloured veneers with fancy floral MOP bearing the brand name Weymann.

The megaphonic rim is also made from quality rosewood, with the upper edge inlaid with purfling and bound with ivory celluloid. The top of the rim is veneered with ebony and inlaid with pearl in the form of ornamental leaves. The notched tension hoop is hand engraved and plated in gold as is the 20 bracket hooks and nuts. The banjo is fitted with a Remo 11″ white smooth top head.

The resonator is also made from solid rosewood with the upper and lower edges bound with ivory celluloid. the resonator top has a gold plated fitted flange cut in a floral design which sets this banjo of. The banjo looks stunning and sounds amazing with low playing action and comes with a new brown leatherette plush red lined hard case in great condition.

William Lange Triple X Short Scale

Written by Paul Conlon. Posted in Banjo Archive, For Sale

The Triple X range of short scale tenor banjos where manufactured by the William Lange Company famous for producing the Paramount range of banjos. These early models were built between 1924 – 1926 and available in tenor, plectrum, 5 string and short scale with versions in 4 styles namely A, B, C, D & professional. The 17 fret short scale were the most popular Triple-X banjos as they were introduced in the days of the tenor banjo ‘tango’ craze in the mid-1920s. The headstock inlay may arguably be similar in sophistication (or even slightly less so) but  the fretboard inlays are quite beautiful and almost at the level of the Professional. The neck is constructed from maple with mahogany wood centre strip.

The Triple-X Banjo Tone

If there is one thing the Triple-X banjo is known for is its unique, balanced, and harmonious tone. They were scientifically constructed with tone production in mind.  The Lange Triple-X tone-ring system is nothing like anything that was produced before 1924. The tone chamber has twenty separate 7/8 inch (internal) diameter tone tubes that support a hollow rolled tone ring on which the banjo head is stretched over producing a clear bell tone. These tubes rise above the banjo pot about one inch high and carry forth down through the pot into the sound chamber, being flush with the pot. The maple pie crust resonator amplifies the sounds from the tone chamber adding to the unique sound, and can be removed if you prefer playing as a open back banjo.
