Vega Whyte Ladie 17 Fret Tenor Banjo

Written by Paul Conlon. Posted in For Sale, Tune Archive

A very rare find! This particular Vega banjo features the highly sought-after “Whyte Laydie” tone ring with a 17-fret “short-scale” laminated maple neck and Vega “Star” logo on the headstock. A serial number of 79658 is stamped into the rim, giving us an estimate of 1926 as the year of manufacture. The serial also matches the one stamped into the square dowel.

This banjo has the nice upscale appointments common to the WL (“style R”) models, ebony fretboard with white binding, star and dot position inlay markers, MOP star in the headstock and multi-piece maple neck with centre walnut laminate. Fitted with quality Schaller geared tuners, all working perfectly and holding tune.

1/2” maple rim with tortoise plastic binding on the bottom and below the tone ring. The piecrust resonator has tortoise shell binding around the outer edge. Nickel plated bracket-band around the rim’s middle housing the shoes also found on the professional & deluxe models. Original Presto tail piece and Vega armrest, fitted with Remo 10 – 15/16″ head, hand made Conlon bridge and new strings.

The action is low and the neck is perfectly straight. It is a delight to play and easily reached 7th fret makes tunes comfortable to play. Comes with original vintage case.
